Take Time On National Clean Out Your Computer Day To Declutter And Protect Your Personal Information

You may know the second Monday of February each year is National Clean Out Your Computer Day, but do you take the time to acknowledge the day and clean up your computer? It’s a good time to venture into your computer and start looking around. Is your desktop littered with files? Do you have miscellaneous catch-all folders? This is a good time to go ahead and organize your files and folder. While you are at it delete your old and/or duplicate files. Do you have outdated programs that you don’t use any longer? Uninstall those and make more room for new programs. This is also a great time to back up your system. So take some time this February 8th and get your computer system in order.

While you were looking around your system did you see any Personal Identifiable Information lying around? Personal Identifiable Information, or PII, is defined by the U.S. Department of Labor as information: (i) that directly identifies an individual (e.g., name, address, social security number or other identifying number or code, telephone number, email address, etc.) or (ii) by which an agency intends to identify specific individuals in conjunction with other data elements, i.e., indirect identification. (These data elements may include a combination of gender, race, birth date, geographic indicator, and other descriptors). Additionally, information permitting the physical or online contacting of a specific individual is the same as personally identifiable information. If your PII gets into the wrong hands you could have an identity theft problem on your hands. Do you have tax returns on your computer? How about a resume or maybe a job application? These are just a few common examples of files that contain your personal information, but there are plenty of others as well. If your computer is connected to a network, almost any network, you have a pathway for an electronic intruder to come in and steal your data. Take this February 8th to not only organize and cleanup your computer but also to safeguard your PII.
